"International Traumatic Stress Update Feedback from the 2007 ISTSS 23rd Annual Conference" International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS)

Abstract:
The annual meeting of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) serves as a useful barometer of current and future thinking in the field of traumatic stress.
Every year groundbreaking new research and interventions are showcased, discussed and debated. This seminar will reflect upon the new and important issues on the international agenda and their relevance and implications for South Africa. Topics covered during the seminar will be:

  • The new treatment guidelines for PTSD.
  • Innovations in information technology for early intervention.
  • Innovations in supervision for traumatic stress practitioners.
  • New findings on the relationship between sleep and PTSD.
  • The South African presentation at the international conference.

Speaker:
Craig Higson-Smith is a locally and internationally recognised leader in the field of traumatic stress. He is a psychologist with a MA (cum laude) from the University of Natal, one of the founding members of SAITS and currently serves on its Board of Directors. During his career, he has lectured at several universities, and has worked as a senior Research Specialist for the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa. Currently he provides specialist training in traumatic stress to psychologists and social workers. His special interests are in the fields of child protection as well as cross-cultural psychology and community-based intervention.
He has published several papers, book chapters and books in these areas.
